Student Legal Services

Student Legal Services (SLS) is a full-service law office, within the Office of the Dean of Students, dedicated to providing legal solutions for currently-enrolled students.

All currently-registered UIC students who have paid the Student Service Fee for the current semester/session, including:

  • Undergraduates
  • Graduate Students
  • Professional Students

There are no fees charged for services provided, because it is paid for with Student Service Fees. Students will need to pay for court or filing fees, if they apply.

When you come to the appointment, you must:

  • Bring your I-Card (student ID card) for proof of current registration
  • Sign an Agreement for Student Legal Services and complete an Intake form
  • Bring all documents relevant to your issue

SLS offers advice and representation on a wide variety of legal matters, including:

  • Landlord-Tenant Issues
  • Contract Disputes
  • Expungement of Records
  • Family Law (some)
  • Employment Agreement Advisement
  • Traffic Law Matters
  • Court Representation (some)
  • Notary Services
  • Criminal Law Matters (basic)
  • Orders of Protection
  • Visa/Immigration Issues (student related)

We do not handle matters involving:

  • One UIC student against another
  • Cases against UIC, its trustees, officers, agents, associations, departments, or employees
  • UIC grievance or disciplinary actions
